The Price of Understanding

A greedy goblin alchemist claims he can break the language barrier between the Horde and Alliance. All he needs is a lost manuscript, three unlikely ingredients, and a small fortune in gold.

Knowledge is power. Power has a price.

Final price 666 gold

"Peace between the Horde and Alliance? Hah! Now THAT would be bad for business. But communication? Communication is a gold mine!"
— Professor Fizzwick Goldtongue

What the elixirs actually do

A new way to understand Azeroth. The reward is not a new weapon or mount. It is the ability to understand the words of the opposing faction, opening the door to conversations and adventures that once ended at the language barrier.

Elixir of Tongues 5 gold · Temporary Sold by Fizzwick, with three available in stock at a time. One bottle lets you understand spoken languages for one hour. No quest is required.
Everlasting Elixir of Tongues 666 gold · Permanent Earn the opportunity to purchase it through the questline. Its effect is permanent for that character once consumed. Fizzwick can replace a lost bottle for characters who have already paid.
Understanding is not the same as speaking

You can read the opposing faction's /say, /yell, and party messages, but cannot speak their language yourself. Each side needs its own elixir to understand the other. When both characters understand each other, cross-faction party invitations become possible; dungeons, raids, healing, and buffs then function as they would for a normal party. Battlegrounds remain faction versus faction.

A practical beginning: try Fizzwick's one-hour elixir with a friend first. If hearing the other side changes your view of the world, come back for the permanent formula.

The three-quest story

Three quests. One very expensive breakthrough.

Words Worth Hearing

An epilogue worth listening to. With the elixir working, Fizzwick sends you to listen to someone from the other side. Your task is simple: hear them out. What you discover may stay with you longer than the magic.

Thorgash Bloodscar, a grey-bearded orc veteran with a shield
Alliance players meet Thorgash Bloodscar A Horde veteran whose many battles have brought victory, grief, and a lifetime of questions. "My son died fighting your people. I wonder if your sons die believing the same things."
Chance Blackwater, an older human sailor with a white beard
Horde players meet Chance Blackwater An older human sailor who has learned that honor and betrayal do not belong to one banner. "The sea cares little for our banners. I've been saved by orcs and betrayed by men."
Back at Boucher's Cauldron

Once you return, Fizzwick greets his latest success with the only affection a goblin businessman can reliably show: admiration for a paying customer.

"Ah, my favorite customer! Still understandin' everybody? Fantastic! Now if only I could invent a potion to make you forget what you paid me!"

Before you set sail

Is this questline available to both factions?
Yes. Alliance and Horde characters can begin at level 15.
What exactly do I learn?
Alliance characters permanently understand Orcish; Horde characters permanently understand Common. This is comprehension, not the ability to speak that language.
Can I group with the opposing faction?
Yes, when both characters can understand each other. Normal group activities become possible; battlegrounds stay faction versus faction.
Is the effect account-wide?
No. It is per character. The effect persists through logouts and restarts.
What about whispers, mail, and playerbots?
Whispers and mail remain faction-locked. Playerbots cannot take the quests or use the elixirs.
What if I lose the permanent elixir?
Fizzwick can provide a replacement to a character that has already paid and lost the effect. He will almost certainly complain about it.
