The Legend of the Last Cast

Old Man Heming has sold bait in Booty Bay for forty years and has a story for every fish he never caught. Prove you can hold a rod, and he will send you after the three that got away.

The fish don't always bite. But they never will if ye don't cast.

"Any fool can swing a sword, lad. Takes a patient fool to stare at a bobber for six hours."
— Old Man Heming

What you earn

A fishing pole with a story, and a name to go with it. No raid, no gold sink: just patience, a bit of travel, and five fish Heming has been waiting most of his life to see.

Heming's Lucky Fishing Pole Unique · Binds when picked up · Equip: Fishing +30 Heming's own pole, handed over at the end of the chain. "The fish don't always bite, lad. But they never will if ye don't cast."
The title "Salty" Finale · Both factions Salty Azzkikr, Salty Payne, Salty whoever you are. Granted with the last quest, along with a good chunk of Booty Bay reputation.
Skill gates, not level gates

Each quest opens at a Fishing skill: 25, 75, 150, 225 and 300. Any character of either faction can start as soon as the first number is on the sheet, and the chain waits for you between quests. Heming sells supplies and lures if you turn up without any, and the quest rewards keep you stocked.

The quest fish keep to open water. Schools of fish have their own catch; cast beside them, not into them. Each special fish bites only for someone on its quest, and only once.

The five-quest story

Five casts. One old man's unfinished business.

A rod, a lantern and a bucket of smallfish on a riverbank, a fish leaping by the bobber below a stone bridge
Quest 1 · Fishing 25

A Fishy Beginning

Heming doubts you can catch a fish without falling in the water. Prove him wrong with ten Raw Brilliant Smallfish from the ponds and streams of any starting zone. He has a very good eye for auction-house fish. Well, one.

Reward: Experience, 15 silver, five Shiny Baubles and a little Booty Bay rep.

A Rainbow Fin Albacore leaping from the surf below a cliff-top tower
Quest 2 · Fishing 75

Something Fishy

A puddle is one thing; the sea is another. Bring back ten Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore from the coasts of Westfall, the Barrens, Darkshore, Silverpine, the Wetlands or Hillsbrad, and Heming starts to wonder whether you have the patience for something unusual.

Reward: Experience, 50 silver, five Bright Baubles and a little Booty Bay rep.

The Whispering Riverfin, a silver fish trailing blue light, leaping below a jungle waterfall
Quest 3 · Fishing 150

The River Remembers

Years ago Heming's line started singing on a quiet stretch of water deep in Stranglethorn, and the fish on the end of it whispered his name. Find the Whispering Riverfin in Lake Nazferiti. If it starts talking to you, don't answer.

Reward: Experience, 1 gold, five Nightcrawlers and a little Booty Bay rep.

The Scarred Stranglethorn Sailfin leaping through a lightning storm, a red scar on its side
Quest 4 · Fishing 225

The One That Got Away

Blue as the sea, mean as a cornered murloc, with a scar the length of his side. The sailfin that snapped Heming's line forty years ago, and took his favourite hat with it, still hunts off the Southern Savage Coast north of Booty Bay. Heming wants to know if the old bastard is still out there.

Reward: Experience, 3 gold, five Aquadynamic Fish Attractors and a good bit of Booty Bay rep.

The Gilded Leviathan, a huge golden fish, bursting from the sea at sunset
Quest 5 · Fishing 300

Heming's Last Cast

Forty-seven years ago, off the coast of Tanaris, Heming saw a fish bigger than any he had ever seen, with golden scales shining like the morning sun. He lost three poles, two boats and a pair of trousers to it. Sail to Land's End Beach at the bottom of the world, cast where the warm currents meet the rocks, and don't you dare let go.

Reward: Experience, 5 gold, Heming's Lucky Fishing Pole, the title "Salty" and a lot of Booty Bay rep.

Back at The Happy Bobber

Heming never did land the Leviathan himself. He has his own ideas about what that makes him.

"The greatest fisherman ain't the one who catches the biggest fish. It's the one who never stops castin'."

Before you set sail

Is this questline available to both factions?
Yes. Any character with Fishing 25 can start it, and the later quests open at 75, 150, 225 and 300. There is no level requirement of its own.
Where do the special fish bite?
Only in the water each quest names: Lake Nazferiti in Stranglethorn, the sea off the Southern Savage Coast north of Booty Bay, and off Land's End Beach at the southern tip of Tanaris. Open water, not schools of fish.
How long does each fish take?
A few casts for the Riverfin, more for the Sailfin, and the Leviathan can take a good dozen. Lures help with the skill checks, not with the odds.
Can someone else catch my fish, or can I catch two?
No. A special fish is offered only to a player whose log still needs it, and it stops biting the moment it is in your bag.
What does the pole do?
Heming's Lucky Fishing Pole adds 30 Fishing skill while equipped. It is unique and binds when picked up, so one per character.
What if I lose the pole?
Ask on the Discord. A game master can mail a replacement to the character that earned it.
